Dark Light

This post has been in the pipeline for a while, ever since I saw Nat Eliasons’ post of exactly the same name a few months back. And yes, I know we are almost halfway through the year. Your point is noted.

Every since I started writing on this site, I’ve realised that the very process of writing helps me process my own thoughts and ideas, the fact that I publish these thoughts publicly and that whatever I write may benefit the reader is just a pleasant byproduct.

The whole purpose of this post is to first and foremost cement my own goals and principles on digital paper, if it so happens that you, the reader, gains benefit or inspiration for your own goals, that’d be a pleasing outcome.

My Big Five

Before getting to my top goals for the year, I think it’s a good idea to define my top ‘end goals’ as of May 2021. End goals are audacious goal where, if you looked back on your life at the end, what is it that you would liked to have accomplished? By taking this approach to goal setting, big goals don’t seem as big – you have a whole lifetime to achieve them.

  1. Become a world class musician and guitar player
  2. Earn $100,000 per month in passive and active income
  3. Become a best selling author
  4. Maintain the healthiest mind and body I can throughout my entire life
  5. Build technology that improves the live of humanity and/or saves the planet

All whilst living life seeking adventure and having enriching experiences.

With my top 5 now defined, I now have the clarity to define my goals this year, doing my best to align them with one of the 5 above.

Physical Health Goals

Receive my first stripe in Brazilian Jujitsu
Related to: Maintain the healthiest body and mind I can throughout my entire life.

I had been training in Brazilian Jujitsu for a good few months in the U.K until covid hit and closed all the gyms. Since living here is Australia I have gotten back into training consistently. I decided a while ago that BJJ will be my fitness activity of choice long term. It is safe, is an extremely good test of strength and fitness, supports mobility, is social and challenges the mind. I will be happy if I can receive my first stripe this year.

Work thought Convict Conditioning for Strength Training
Related to: Maintain the healthiest body and mind I can throughout my entire life.

I’ve always typically worked out in the gym, but this year I want to focus on a more calisthenic style of training. I realised recently that whilst I may be strong at the gym bench pressing and squatting, this strength does’t always transfer to functional strength. Calisthenics lends itself more to functional strength, which I’m finding much more important as I get older.

Achieve a waist to height ration of 0.5 or lower
Related to: Maintain the healthiest body and mind I can throughout my entire life.

I have heard that a better gage of body fat is to measure your own waist to height ratio. This doesn’t require any expensive equipment and is a consistent measurement. I haven’t tracked this before so once I know my base line will adjust diet and lifestyle accordingly. Keeping body fit % in check is such an important marker for physical and hormonal health and I think it is important that we all start to take it more seriously.

Physical Health Principles

Regularly practice safe sun exposure
Related to: Maintain the healthiest body and mind I can throughout my entire life.

As I work inside, it is very often I don’t get out in the sunlight until very late in the day. After listening to this podcast, I’ve learnt how important it is to improve vitamin d levels through direct sun exposure. If done right benefits include, improved hormone health, weight management, cancer prevention (ironically..) and mood & wellbeing. Best of all its free! I use the app dMinder to monitor and track sun exposure.

Continue to eat a Carnivore Adjacent diet
Related to: Maintain the healthiest body and mind I can throughout my entire life.

I have been mostly carnivore for over 9 months now and feel the best I ever had. When I slip and eat carb heavy, industrial oil soaked fast foods I really notice how poor it makes me feel. This year I will continue this WOE (way of eating), consisting of mainly, animal products (meat, eggs and dairy), limited leafy green and fermented vegetables.

Mental Health Principles

Visualise or meditate daily
Related to: Maintain the healthiest body and mind I can throughout my entire life.

I believe visualisation and active meditation can be the single most determining factor that contributes to my success and flow in day to day life. Creative visualisation has been proven time and time again to improve results of sports professionals, the same can be true for any other area of your life. If you want an introduction to this subject, I can recommend the book Psycho Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz.

Decompress with regular hikes and/or nature based activities
Related to: Maintain the healthiest body and mind I can throughout my entire life.

It’s been proven that getting out in nature is one of the best things you can do to improve mental health. When we spend all our days surrounded by technology it’s great to be able to get away from it all and give you brain space to think and process thoughts without interruption. I want to continue to cultivate outdoor experiences such as surfing, snowboarding, hiking, perhaps even rock climbing if I can conquer my fear of heights…lone step at a time.

Business Goals

Publish 50 Blog Posts
Related to: Earn $100,000 per month in passive and active income.

Nat Eliason recommends publishing at least 50 ‘draft’ quality blog posts when first starting a blog. The rate of production can ultimately affect how successful a blog is in the early stages. Paralysis by over analysis can be a huge motivation killer when in reality the the goal should be to just write and publish. The rest will figure itself by simply repeating the process over and over.

Create and publish 50 youTube videos
Related to: Earn $100,000 per month in passive and active income.

Another things I would like to do this year is create a youTube channel. I’m not sure what the main topic will be but the goal will be to initially make 50 video. This is what Ali Abduul did over the first 6 months of creating his channel, which helped him generate over 1,000 views.

Achieve a promotion (again)
Related to: Earn $100,000 per month in passive and active income.

The company I work for is currently experiencing exponential growth. Between now and the end of the year part of my career progression is to be promoted into another role. My day to day activities will be reflected in achieving that.

Develop a world class sales team
Related to: Earn $100,000 per month in passive and active income.

I currently manage a team of four across 8 different accounts. By the end of 2021 I want every one of them to be achieving 100% of target consistently. This goal is directly linked to my goal of achieving another promotion. Developing leadership and continuously improving sales skills should be a big focus.

Financial Goals

Save deposit for a property
Related to: Earn $100,000 per month in passive and active income.

After travelling for so long, it will be nice to settle and start getting some property together. This year will be focused on building up a deposit in order to buy Q1 or Q2 next year.

Other Goals to Consider this Year

  • Learn to code
  • Start a music project
  • Compete in a spartan race
  • Begin writing a book
  • Plan and book experiences each quarter
  • Quit drinking….beer
  • Social/Relationship goals
  • Learn NLP

If you were to complete this exercise yourself, you might start to notice how much your yearly goals contribute to one or many of your top 5 goals. For example, my desire to improve as a sales professional and manager can prompt me to create content on the subject which could either be on my blog or youTube channel. My desire to improve my mind and body almost always relates to how well I will perform at my job and day to day productivity. My desire to buy property will directly effect wealth creation and therefore contribute to my financial goals.

Are you looking to get more laser focused in your goal setting this year? Start by projecting to the end of your life, and looking back on it. What would you have liked to have achieved? What are the top 5 things? Once you have figured out that, make them at least 50% more challenging (read: unattainable and/or exciting).

Once you know what your big 5 are, set your goals for the year, with the intention of achieving your top 5.
